Good post Jonathan and a good quote too.
I'd like to add to that by saying that this week I got hold of the Paul Anka big band album (a MUST have, as the arrangements are just awesome!) and Vinnie's playing is just impecable. There are just a couple of fills that give him away and one typical Vinnie break that only he could do, where he goes from 16's to heavy triplets, but apart from that, it could have been anyone really.
He laid it down where he needed and caught the phrasing nicely. He definitely had his session hat on and as the above quote said, he wouldn't have lasted one chorus, playing the way he did on the Buddy tapes. That was just sheer audacity and crass playing - even though we all love it to bits!
To compare Soph to Vinnie is just wrong and I can't hear it at all.
